MTR만으로 녹음한 음원으로 발매한 곡들

이전 포스트에서 설명했듯 요즘은 MTR을 녹음 자체보다는 공연을 할 때 MR을 재생하는 목적으로 주로 사용되지만, 이런 MTR만으로 녹음한 음원을 실제 앨범에 수록하고 발매한 사례들이 굉장히 많습니다.

지금부터 그런 앨범들과 수록곡들을 몇 곡 소개하겠습니다.

브루스 스프링스틴^{Bruce Springsteen}이 1982년에 발매한 앨범, NEBRASKA의 전곡이 TASCAM의 MTR인 portastudio 144로 녹음되었습니다.

참고로 지금 가져온 곡인 Born in the U.S.A.는 NEBRASKA에 수록하기 위해 1982년에 녹음되었지만 최종적으로 수록되지 않았고, 이후 밴드 사운드로 편곡되어 재녹음해서 1984년 앨범인 Born in the U.S.A.에 수록됩니다.

그리고 이 앨범 Born in the U.S.A.는 스프링스틴을 세계적인 슈퍼스타로 만들었습니다.

위에 올려놓은 MTR만으로 녹음한 Born in the U.S.A.의 데모 버전은 후에 1998년 앨범 TRACKS에 수록되어 발매됩니다.

밴드 가이디드 바이 보이시즈^{Guided By Voices}의 1994년 앨범, bee thousand도 4트랙의 MTR로 녹음되었습니다.

어느 회사의 어떤 모델인지는 찾을 수 없었습니다.

bee thousand는 발매된 해에 1994년의 베스트 앨범에서 10위에 랭크되기도 하고, 2009년에는 아마존닷컴이 뽑은 역대 최고의 인디 록 앨범 100장에서 1위를 하기도 했습니다.

그 유명한 레드 핫 칠리 페퍼스^{Red Hot Chili Peppers}의 기타리스트인 존 프루시안테^{John Frusciante}의 1994년에 발매한 솔로 앨범, Niandra LaDes and Usually Just a T-Shirt가 TASCAM의 MTR인 portastudio 424로 녹음되었다고 알려져 있습니다.

존 프루시안테는 밴드 RHCP의 성공으로 인한 압박감과 명성에 대한 거부감 때문에 1992년에 밴드를 탈퇴했었습니다.

솔로 앨범 Niandra LaDes and Usually Just a T-Shirt는 밴드에서 나와 우울증과 심각한 약물 중독에 빠져 있던 시기에 집에만 틀어박혀서 지내는 상태에서 녹음되었습니다.

지금 가져온 곡인 My Smile Is A Rifle만 들어봐도.. 정말 굉장히 혼란스러운 느낌이 그대로 전해집니다.

존 프루시안테는 마약 중독에서 회복한 후인 1998년에 밴드에 다시 합류하여, 다음 앨범인 CALIFORNICATION부터 다시 RHCP의 기타를 담당하게 됩니다.

MTR로 녹음된 음악의 음질적 특성

이 곡들을 다 들어보시면 대충 느낌이 오겠지만, 실제 앨범이 아니라 데모 테이프를 듣는 것처럼 음질이 깔끔하지 않고 거칠고 지저분합니다.

이때 사용되었던 MTR들은 2000년 이전의 20세기에 사용되던 카세트테이프가 들어가는 MTR인데, CD 수준의 음질도 뽑아내는 요즘의 MTR로 이런 식으로 녹음을 한다면 어느 정도의 퀄리티를 뽑아낼 수 있는 것인지 호기심이 생깁니다.

21세기에도 DAW를 사용하지 않고 MTR만으로 녹음해서 발매하는 앨범들이 있긴 한데, 다만 그 목적이 예전처럼 '예산 절감'이 아니라 그 옛 느낌을 표현하기 위한 '예술적 미학'에 더 집중되는 경향이 있습니다.

그래서 21세기인 지금 MTR만으로 녹음하는 경우에도 사용하는 장비는 요즘 나오는 최신 MTR이 아니라 그 예전의 테이프가 들어가는 MTR을 주로 쓴다고 합니다.
